Recently a new resource for exploring Oakland’s history has been created. The Oakland Museum has an extensive collection of early photographs of the city. 199 of these have now been scanned and provided online at the Online Archive of California. Here’s one of Lake Merritt from 1886 showing the Chabot house on the lake. The rest are equally fascinating, dating from 1842-1967. I always love to see these old photos of places I'm familiar with. It's fascinating to think how it must have been to see the city over 100 years ago when it was so different.
