I see in today's New York Times that Hezbollah is leading the work to rebuild Lebanon after the cease-fire. I am overjoyed that the cease-fire is holding. And at the same time I think that Israel can do more to help Lebanon rebuild. They did massive damage to that country and it seems only fair that they help clean it up. It's not clear how this would be done, I don't think they can just hand over a bunch of money to the government of Lebanon and certainly not to Hezbollah. Some third party would have to help with the rebuilding.
And to be fair, Lebanon should help rebuild Israel. Rockets fired from Lebanon did significant damage there as well. I'd like to see the Lebanese take responsibility for the actions of their citizens in attacking Israel.
My dream is that by helping each other rebuild, both sides would think twice about attacking in the future. I know this whole idea is impossible, a hopeless fantasy. But I gotta say that what the two sides are doing now isn't such a great plan either.
