Just got back from laughing for 2 ½ hours straight. Saw Dead Man’s Chest today and I loved it. Sure it’s disjointed, full of insane plot twists, laden with special effects and silly monsters, all the things critics like to go on about. But it’s also just a lot of fun. I think the most important thing to remember is something the screenwriters said on the commentary to the first installment of Pirates – that Jack Sparrow is channeling Bugs Bunny. This is a fantastic cartoon with living actors. All we have to do is laugh along with Bugs/Captain Jack as he works his wiles on whatever plot Elmer’s got for him next.
My only sadness is that I have to wait a whole year to see what happens next. Except that I’ll be able to get the DVD before then for another fix of Pirates. The commentaries on the first DVD were fantastic, especially the one by Keira Knightley and Jack Davenport. Too many commentaries consist of people saying, “Oh, there’s Jamie Spurdeloo. He’s the greatest flodderboffer in the business, he was fantastic.” Keira and Jack spent their whole commentary making fun of everything in the film, especially their own performances.
