This is the runup time to a very important election. We Democrats have a chance to take back one or both branches of congress and stop the madness that the Bush administration has imposed on the world for five plus years. So please, vote, get your friends to vote, get your dogs to vote, it's critical.
Several months ago I read a rousing book about changing the way the Democratic Party works. The book is Crashing the Gate by Jerome Armstrong and Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, the folks from the blog Daily Kos. There are lots of important ideas inside its covers, but there's one I want to write about today.
Armstrong and Zuniga write about the story of how the right built its structure over the years to reach the point of prominence they enjoy today in the government of the United States. They describe the infrastructure the right developed, the think tanks, the training centers, the support they offer up and coming newcomers within their ranks. Then they look at the left to note how much slimmer our infrastructure is. And they encourage the readers to do something about that.
So Madam Musing and I have done something. We picked two organizations and we pledged a set amount to be charged to our credit card every month so these groups would know they have that money on an ongoing basis. That will allow them to make better plans and to work in election seasons and between elections to organize a liberal structure and base.
The first organization is the Democratic National Committee headed by Howard Dean. We really appreciated his plan to make sure there's a Democratic presence in all 50 states. The Democratic message is a good one for the entire country. It's time to make sure that message gets out everywhere in our land. And with the current meltdown of the Republicans, the 50 state initiative is looking better and better.
The second organization is Wellstone Action which trains Democrats in how to run a political campaign. It's mission is "to honor the legacy of Paul and Sheila Wellstone by continuing their work through training, educating, mobilizing and organizing a vast network of progressive individuals and organizations." Paul Wellstone was a wonderful senator from Minnesota who died in a plane crash in 2002. One of the main ways Wellstone Action accomplishes its mission is through a training program called Camp Wellstone. This seems to us to be a very worthy bit of progressive action to support and develop.
So please vote, support progressive candidates and causes, both now and ongoing so that we can develop a better Democratic infrastructure, and check out Crashing the Gate.
