I’ve just discovered Pig Radio, KPIG out of Santa Cruz. Listen at 107.5 FM in Santa Cruz or 1510 AM in the SF Bay Area. I was totally bored one day with my usual AM stations and was searching around the dial to find something better. After skipping past the inevitable right wing wackos and radio evangelists, I came upon such sweet, sweet music it brought tears to my eyes.
Blues, bluegrass, jazz instrumentals, faux-news from the Onion, it’s a breath of fresh air. The music is so different from the tired rehash of hits from prior decades. Sure, there are tunes from the Dead and Dylan and other oldies but goodies. But mixed in will be new stuff from singers I’ve never heard of. And long instrumentals that no other radio station would ever play.
And I’m totally smitten with “Zoof, your girl in the curl” who gives the morning surf reports. It’s news that’s so foreign to me that I listen transfixed. She sounds so laid back and relaxed, you imagine the report is coming from a hammock swinging between two palm trees. But then she comes out with such arcane numbers that you know surfers are living in a different universe from the rest of us. She carefully tells us that the swells are coming in from 312 degrees, a number that’s clearly important, and different from 311 or 313. And she tells us some heights at various buoys ranging around the coast. What the heights signify is still a mystery to me. But if you’re a surfer, I’m sure they’re vital news.
