Twas reading one of my favorite blogs, Aetiology, by Dr. Tara Smith of the University of Iowa. Today she provided a link to the Iowa Academy of Science and its online newsletter. All this is by way of introduction to the fascinating program I read about in the newsletter. It's called GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment). Check out the GLOBE website.
I've only just begun to explore what GLOBE is doing worldwide. But the basic idea is that students in schools around the world will collect data and send those readings to the central GLOBE database. Then the data can be used for environmental research. What a wonderful way to get kids involved in the actual doing of science and the excitement of discovery. And what a wonderful way for kids to learn about the wide world, other lands, other peoples and our interconnectedness.
