Just a quick thought about being a Democrat. I've read many comments in the papers and in the blogs over the past few years, usually along the lines of "Here's where the Democrats are screwing up again" or "When will the Democrats ever get things together". I know these pundits and journalists want to maintain their distance and objectivity. But just once I'd like to read the following:
"I'm a Democrat. And I see where my party is screwing up again. When will we Democrats ever get things together."
See, the same words feel totally different if the writer acknowledges being a Democrat. The writer understands that all we Democrats are part of the problem. And we can be part of the solution. Most importantly, the writer becomes a part of the problem he or she's describing, rather than being separate from it.
Face it, given the way the United States political system is structured right now, there are only two games in town - the Republicans and the Democrats. So if we want the horror show of the past few years to end, we've got to get our Democratic Party moving in the right direction.
