Read a good article in the NY Times (may require signing up with NYT) today by Tom Zeller Jr. about some online war diaries coming out of the Israel-Lebanon conflict. Here are some videos from Israel
This is a very painful event to see happening to the people of the world. I do think Israel was attacked and I can understand them responding. How would I feel if a group in Canada dedicated to the eradication of the United States attacked my country? I’d certainly feel that a response was necessary. On the other hand, Israel’s response does seem excessive and not directed at their real enemy, Hezbollah. On the other hand, Israel is a tiny country surrounded by many countries which have sworn their desire that it disappear from the face of the earth. They can’t afford to take any attack lightly.
I have two thoughts. The first is to support a cease fire along with the creation of an international force to patrol the border between the two countries. The second is for Israel to commit to help rebuild Lebanon once this war is over. It seems only right and proper, and may lead to Israel being more committed to Lebanon’s success.
